Guide for new users
Hi and welcome. This page is designed as a quick guide for someone who has just had their account authorised. It'll take you through all the major things you need to know to get around.
What is this place about?
It is designed to serve two purposes: Firstly, it aims to provide a constructive, safe, friendly, moron-free community environment for artists to develop their skills and ideas. Secondly, it serves an online device for showcasing your work in a professional manner.
It was originally designed by kylarsk and elleeden, built by kylarsk, your admins are kylarsk, sweetaesthetic and elleeden.
It is free to use, but membership here is by invitation only.
Customising your page
Start at the page manager. This can be found in the top menu. All your account management functions can be found here.
First, you'll want to choose a page skin. Find the Profile section in the top left of the page manager. Select a page skin from the dropdown menu, click "give me a blank header" and hit submit. This will install your new skin, and also generate a "blank" header graphic that you can drag to your desktop, customise, and then upload again. (nb: a few skins don't have blank headers to match, but it's mostly the super-simple ones.)
You can upload a page header (800x120 pixels) in GIF or JPG format, from the "page-manager" page. You can also upload an avatar (50x50 pixels) in GIF or JPG format.
Please try to create a header graphic for your page as soon as possible, or ask us for help if you have trouble with this - there are plenty of people who will be happy to make you one.
To edit your front-page text, start from "page manager" and click the "Front page text" link.
To set up your "personal" information page, start from "page manager" and click the "Personal page editor" link. You can fill out as much of the questionnaire as you like, and fill in the other three info areas shown.
Uploading artwork
Artworks are called executions. So, click 'execute' in the menu, and you'll see our one-step uploading page. It is self explanatory, and will give you instructions in the event that you make a mistake.
You may only upload three artworks within a 72-hour (3 day) period. This is to prevent flooding, and you'll get much better feedback this way.
About projects
Art is Murder allows you to divide your gallery into separate sections. A project is a category of artworks within your gallery. You can create a project for all of your work in a certain media, time period, subject, or however you'd like to organise it.
To create a new project, start from 'page-manager' and find the "Create a new project' area.
To move artwork into or out of projects, use the Gallery Manager. Start from 'page manager' and click 'Manage Artwork Gallery'.
About your front page
Your front page shows a random selection of up to seven of whichever artworks you tag as 'featured'. You can edit this in the "Manage Artwork Gallery' section. You can edit the text in the centre panel by clicking 'Front page text' in the page manager.
Swiping
"Swiping" another members' artwork is a way of marking it as a favourite work. To swipe an artwork, click the 'swipe' button on the display page when you view the artwork. Your avatar will be placed on that artwork's page, under "Swiped by". You can remove it in the same fashion. Swiping people's work help to decide what artwork is shown more prominently in certain parts of the site.
Stalking
Your stalking page allows you to keep track of recent work by your favourite artists, and in your favourite genres. It will show the ten most recent works by the artists you are stalking, and also the ten most recent works in the classifications you stalk. Select artists & classifications to 'stalk' using the panel on the right hand side of the stalking page.
Scrapbook
Accessed via the page manager, this is a tool that allows you to upload special GIF or JPG graphics for use within your journal and personal page, so that you can make your own custom title graphics, insert snapshots and so on. There are more instructions on how to use it on the Scrapbook page.
A few more things:
Please click here to read the rules.
If you encounter a blank white screen, it's likely that your login has timed out. This will be made friendlier eventually.

That means that if you are a user of stock photographs, you must take care not to violate restrictions on the use of these photographs outside of deviantART. Do not use your Art is Murder gallery to post random snapshots, graphical scraps or internet icons and signatures. Your gallery is for your artwork. Use the scrapbook and your journal for anything else.
Finally - this website is for active artists to help and encourage each other's development. Accounts that fall into complete disuse (zero logins) for months on end are deleted. So if you're going somewhere for a while please let us know what's going on.
Welcome to Art Is Murder! We're really glad you have accepted our invitation, and sincerely hope you find this a rewarding and friendly place to develop your art.
